Continents are huge land masses. According to classical geography, they are surrounded by water like humongous islands, but in fact they may be sourrounded by water, land, ice, and armies. For instance, Europe and Asia are clearly one continent, but are considered as two continents for purposes of League Football.

Countries are political divisions of land masses (usually continents but sometimes islands or undersea coral ridges). Countries may have natural boundaries such as rivers or mountains, man-made boundaries such as painted black lines, fences and mine fields, or unnatural boundaries, such as murderous differences between warring, peaceful, religious factions. (Ed. note - such boundaries may also occur inside a country, leading to states, provinces, civil war, and other forms of entertainment.)

States, provinces and the like, are typically subdivisions or countries. They typically have a form of government, whose primary purpose seems to be a sort of low-level, usually non-lethal warfare with the national (or federal) government (I.E., that of the country).Boundaries are determined in a manner similar to those of countries - randomly.

Cities, towns, and related terms refer to aggregations of humans living together in a common locale, sometimes harmoniously. The smaller ones often have reasonable forms of self-government, but at some point yet undiscovered, a critical mass of some sort is hit, and the government begins to bloat enormously, just as it does in states and nations. Eventually it evolves into a deadly life form concerned only with its own existence. Like a rabid fish (sic) it will eat everything in the vicinity, including its citizens.
